The weather’s getting hotter, the kids are getting out of school, and summer is right around the corner. That means that you’ll likely be hitting the road at some point, whether it’s to go camping with your family, to visit the beach with your loved ones, or go tailgating with your buddies.

One of the many benefits of a grill is that it can go with you on these summer adventures. However, before you just throw your grill in the bed of your truck, it’s important to take some precautions to make sure that your grill and your vehicle don’t get damaged in the process.

If you have a propane grill, the first thing that you’ll want to do is remove the propane tank and secure it safely inside your car. If you leave it attached, it could get punctured or otherwise damaged during the transport. Place it in an area in your car where it won’t roll around or fall, and don’t leave it inside your car unattended for extended periods of time, as cars can get very hot very quickly during the summer.

You’ll also want to remove any cooking tools and loose parts for the grill before you pack it up.

From there, cover your grill either with a grill cover or a moving blanket. Then, strap it securely in your truck bed so that it will not move during transport. The last thing you want is for your grill to fall out of your truck or roll around and get damaged while you drive. If your grill has wheels, then you’ll either want to lock the wheels or lay it on its side during transport.

You should never try to transport a grill on the roof of your car, even if your car has a rack on the top. The risk of the grill falling off is far too great, even when secured tightly.

If you’re ready to get out on the road and find some summer adventures, don’t forget to bring your grill along for the ride! Just be sure to take the proper safety precautions when transporting your grill.
